Mr Pilkington came to us looking for a traditional shaker style kitchen with a modern twist. Instead of designing a kitchen with the same layout as his existing one, we wanted to maximise the countertop space and also include an informal seating area as there wasn’t space for a dining table in this room. The customer was keen to use the space for entertaining, so they asked for a bar area to be part of the design.
The breakfast bar area was designed to be the focal point of the space, with a large Neff gas hob for the customer who enjoys cooking. Two Siemens ovens and a sink are positioned nearby, creating a convenient working triangle. Shaker door fronts in a smooth-painted navy finish were chosen to add a subtle traditional touch. A soft grey tone was used for the wall and tall cabinets to prevent the colour from being overwhelming, providing a pleasing contrast. A rich yellow framed the breakfast bar, adding energy and character to the room. Glass doors, oak interior finish, and downlights elevated the bar area, creating an inviting entertainment space. Thoughtfully placed lighting, such as downlights above the cooking area, wall cabinet lighting, and pendant details above the peninsular, highlights key areas and gives the room an ambient feel, especially in the evening.
The Client was a keen chef, and the couple loved to entertain. They were delighted with the result, which was a delicate balance between a functional everyday kitchen layout and a ‘wow factor’ open plan kitchen/dining space they had always wanted, a space to entertain friends and family for years to come. This was a complete transformation from the previous kitchen, allowing them the perfect space to make the most of their retirement.
